A Day in Universal Studios Singapore
written on February 18th, 2013 by Jean Del Mar
When in Singapore, we never forget to include Universal Studios in our itinerary because it is one of the most sought after tourist destinations. Our trip is simply incomplete without it.
When we set foot in Sentosa Island where Universal Studios is located, we went straight to the huge revolving globe with its logo on it. We took a photo and posed the best we could for an FB cover photo. I bet you would also do the same thing. Hollywood Boulevard
First, we passed Hollywood Boulevard where three lovely ladies caught our eyes; the waitresses in Mel’s Drive-in. They danced and sang in front of Mel’s Dinette. It was also the platform where Daddy O’s boys from the beach performed alternately with the waitresses.
Along the way, we met some of the Hollywood look-a-likes namely Marilyn Monroe, Betty Boop and Charlie Chaplin. Actually, there were a lot of them but they didn’t show up together.
Don’t leave Hollywood Blvd without witnessing the spooktacular rock ‘n roll sing-dance-comedy performance of the infamous Universal monsters, the Monster Rock. The finale even has pyrotechnics to heighten the entertainment. Sad to say that this performance is for your eyes only. Cameras are strictly prohibited inside the theater.
New York
Have you ever wondered how filmmakers create all the special effects in their films? Lights, Camera, Action! will answer your curiosity. In the 4 corners of this studio you will see how effects from the movies are created. It’s simply unbelievable!
We also saw a group of hip-hop dancers, the Rockafellas. They moved and grooved on the sidewalk and even did some break dancing. And I’m proud to say that one of them was a Pinoy. Pinoys are everywhere. We are certainly invading every part of the world. Wootwoot!
Sci-fi City
Are you a Transformers fanatic? Don’t miss the Transformers: Ultimate 3D Battle. Be thrilled and amazed as they knock your feet off of its hyper-realistic 3D ride. You will feel like the main character, Sam. It’s like being in a real movie scene. But you better go early, the queue was a long one. Don’t worry. You won’t get bored while queuing because on your way there, you will be entering the NEST headquarters. There are displays along the way that are perfect for taking pictures.
After that, we rushed to the world’s tallest dueling roller coasters, Battlestar Gallactica: Human vs. Cylon. As we stood in front of the entrance and gazed above at the two terrifying intertwined roller coasters, people were screaming due to the speeds and turns of the ride. Gosh! My knees were trembling. This is the do or die part of Universal Studios. When you take the ride, it is advisable to empty your pockets and leave your shoes to avoid dropping things while riding.
Lost World
Then we moved on to a water splashing experience as we took a ride on the Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure. Afterwards, we watched the live water show, Waterworld, with its death-defying stunts and explosions. Quick hint: Even if you sit at the back most part, you may still get wet. The cast finds a way to drench you wherever you sit. It’s likely you will end up soaking wet. There are disposable raincoats for sale if you don’t have extra clothes to change.
Far Far Away Castle
This place is ideal for the young. When I say young, it is from ages of 2 and beyond. Therefore, children aren’t the only ones who can enjoy. We saw Donkey from the movie Shrek. He sang often in his scenes and we even got to sing along at the Donkey Live Show. Be prepared to laugh out loud as Donkey and his assistant entertain you with their songs, dances and jokes.
The Shrek 4D Adventure is also a must try. This is where you can actually see, hear and feel the action. It’s like being part of the scene. Expect special effects like air-blowing and water spraying during the scene adding to its thrill and excitement.
We didn’t experienced all the rides and see all the characters due to the time constraint. There are 7 zones in Universal Studios Singapore: Hollywood Boulevard, New York City, Sci-fi City, Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Far Far Away Castle and Madagascar.
Here are a few helpful tips:
Be early – You will be able to explore more of what Universal Studios Singapore has to offer.
Be prepared – Bring extra clothes and footwear. You can also bring snacks because food there is a bit expensive.
Be brave – All the rides are a must-try. So don’t be shy and cowardly. Go lang nang go.
Be attentive – Find out the schedules of the shows. This will make your itinerary organized and ensure you have time to see them all.
