8 Ways to Travel Like a Local
written on February 10th, 2016 by Rafia Abubakar
Much has been debated about this argument of Tourist vs Traveler. While at first I was inclined to think one was better than the other, a longer introspective of the whole debate made me realize we may just be making a big deal out of it. In the end it’s really about one’s preference and how we define what makes a great trip for ourselves. As long as we observe the proper etiquette as a visitor (and maybe even incorporate ecotourism ideals in our choices) we should be fine.
To me the idea of travelling like a local is more of experiencing the life and culture of a certain place. You learn something in a more up close and personal manner. But that’s not to say you don’t get to do the same should you choose to travel otherwise.
Here are a few things you can do to get the whole local experience:
Take public transport.
Walk around as much as possible.
Eat local delicacies.
Visit public libraries or museums.
Take a stroll in the nearby parks.
If you’re the active type, try out their popular games or activities.
Have a drink at the local pub. You might hear a good tale from the regulars.
Shop from small and homegrown businesses.
Don’t stop with those mentioned above. There are more ways to enjoy your trip like a local and still enjoy the finer things. If your budget and time allows it, go for it. Just remember to give back to the community by being a responsible visitor, doesn’t matter if you classify yourself as a tourist or a traveler.
