5 Things You Must Not Miss in Batanes

Batanes is the ultimate dream of many a traveler. Its rolling hills, untamed seas and Ivatan villages have an enchanting allure not found anywhere else in the country. What do you do when you finally set foot on this beautiful destination? Let us give you an idea.

1. Bike around Ivatan villages

The cheapest and best way to get around Batanes is through biking. This way you can get to know the terrain and the culture—up close and personal. Pedal through Chavayan and Savidug—beautiful Ivatan villages where the stone cottages appear untouched by time. Interact with the locals and wear a vakul (traditional headgear made from abaca) while you’re at it.

2. Visit the lighthouses

Batanes is home to three stunning lighthouses: The Basco Lighthouse in Naidi, Tayid Lighthouse in Mahatao and Sabtang Lighthouse in Sabtang island are all located atop Batanes’ ever-green hills and are picturesque in their own right.

3. Forget all your cares in Marlboro Country

Perhaps the most iconic destination in Batanes, Racuh a Payaman is more popularly known as Marlboro country to tourists because of its breathtaking expanse of green, ending in a cliff that faces the untamed waves of Diura beach. Just stand and take the view of paradise from there.

4. Keep it real at Honesty Coffee Shop

Did you know that Batanes virtually has zero crime rate? The Honesty Coffee shop is the best example of this. It may be a little more than a hut with food and drinks, but it is probably the most famous coffee shop in Batanes. The premise is simple: take what you need and leave your payment in a box on the counter. Yup, no one mans this café—it’s just about you keeping it honest and real.

5. Chill at these unique beaches

Valugan beach is a far cry from the usual white-sand beaches. Instead this beach facing the Pacific is full of boulders and round rocks. Diura beach on the other hand is an untamed beauty of roiling waves against the cliffs. Homoron Blue Lagoon, also known as the Spanish lagoon, is a quiet nook of aquamarine waters that one shouldn’t miss.
