5 Awesome Things to Do in Rugged Zambales

Roughly 200 kilometers away from Manila, the rugged beauty of Zambales has always entranced the adventurer in us.

Here are five wonderful things to do this side of Luzon:

  1. Conquer Mt. Pinatubo

Zambales is perhaps most famous for the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. These days, the active volcano is a sight to behold. At approximately 1,400 miles above sea level, one can book tours to explore this force of nature. Ride 4x4s, go on treks and see the largest lahar canyon. The breath-taking view alone is worth it.

  1. Have lunch by the Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake

Mt. Pinatubo’s crater lake is a vision in itself. Formed after the fateful eruption in 1991, the lake is of an aquamarine hue similar to what you can see in North America. The waters look serene, but swimming is discouraged by tour guides. Don’t worry though—the view should be enough to take the soreness of travel away.

  1. Camp out at Anawangin Cove

Zambales is blessed with lakes and beautiful coves. One of the more popular destinations is Anawangin Cove. Despite being a popular spot, Anawangin is oft described as peaceful and serene. It has these unique pine-like trees that didn’t appear until after the eruption of Mt Pinatubo. Sit back, relax and camp out under the stars here.

  1. Go Island Hopping

The province also has its share of wonderful islets just off the shore. Capones island has great limestone rock formations, white sand beaches and wonderful coral reefs. Nearby, Camara island boasts a strip of white sand and unique rock formations, too.

  1. Catch some Waves in San Felipe

Who knew? Zambales has surf spots that you can get excited about. Clearly under the radar, the beaches in San Felipe, particularly Liwliwa, is a sanctuary for those who want to get far and away from city life.
