A stupendous sunset view, a good number of fun activities, naturally clean surroundings and hospitable people!
Camotes has it all!
Situated northeast of Cebu island, this little paradise was dubbed the Lost Horizon. Many people have been visiting this island lately. We decided to tell you a little bit about it.
According to legend, the Spaniards visited the island and met natives who were digging the ground for sweet potatoes. The Spaniards asked the natives for the name of the island. Mistakenly, they thought the Spaniards were asking about what they were digging. The natives replied, “Camotes.”
That is the local name for sweet potato. That’s how the island of Camotes got its name. The sweet potato is abundant in this island. Hence, people make different delicacies out of it. To name a few, there are cookies, pudding, otap, cupcakes, hopia and bread all made out of camote.
We spent three days there and stayed in the Santiago Bay Garden Resort. After enjoying the powdery white sand, crystal clear waters and the romantic sunset view in Santiago Bay, we decided to explore the island. We went to Lake Danao Park. It took us approximately 30 minutes travel from the resort. Lake Danao Park perfect for outdoor family adventure. There are picnic areas for visitors who bring their own provisions. Cruising on a little boat is a must-try activity in the park. You can witness the jaw-dropping panoramic view of the lake. Aside from that, you can also experience fishing for fresh tilapia.
Whenever going on a trip, give a little time allowance for the unexpected. For us, it was a side trip to visit the Timubo Cave. We didn’t plan on caving, but when a local told us about it, we just had to visit. The water was refreshing! We couldn’t help ourselves, but dive in.
Don’t forget to drop by Baywalk before leaving the island. Savor the sereneness of the place. Perfect for strolling, exercise and picnics.
Camotes Island is accessible by boat from Cebu island. It will take two hours from Danao Port, Cebu. From the port in Cebu, you will be dropped off in Consuelo, Camotes.
